Kingdom Come: Deliverance II brings an expanded medieval world with an even greater focus on realism and story
The sequel to one of the most acclaimed realistic RPGs finally reached players’ hands at the beginning of this February. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, developed by the Czech studio Warhorse Studios, promises an even more authentic medieval experience than its predecessor. The game once again focuses on a realistic portrayal of medieval Europe, detailed combat mechanics, and a deep story that immerses players in the dramatic events of the time.
The story of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II takes place in 1403, during a time when the Kingdom of Bohemia is torn by power struggles. Players once again take on the role of Henry, the son of a blacksmith, who is thrust into the turmoil of the conflict between King Wenceslaus IV and his brother Sigismund of Luxembourg. This time, the story also moves to royal Kutná Hora, one of the most important cities of medieval Europe, which played a key role in the kingdom’s economy thanks to silver mining. The town of Kutná Hora and its surroundings are rendered with astonishing attention to detail. The developers relied on historical sources and period maps, leading to the creation of an authentic environment. Every alley, house, and church was meticulously modeled according to historical realities. As in the first installment, social hierarchy and relationships between characters play a significant role, with players’ decisions affecting their social standing, NPC reactions, and the direction of the storyline.
The musical accompaniment in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is one of the key elements in creating the right atmosphere. The soundtrack was once again composed by Jan Valta, whose compositions from the first game received numerous awards. The music dynamically adapts to the situation – gentle string melodies accompany wanderings across the countryside, while thundering drums and battle choruses sound during fights. The game’s graphics have undergone significant improvements thanks to a newer version of CryEngine. Lighting, texture details, and especially character facial animations appear much more natural than in the first game. Great emphasis was placed on dynamic weather and day-night cycles, which affect not only the visual side but also gameplay. Rain, fog, or sharp sunlight have a real impact on visibility and NPC behavior, adding another layer of realism. Natural scenery and urban areas can take your breath away so much that at times you won’t know if you’re looking at a real photo or a computer game.

The game maintains its emphasis on realism and faithful representation of historical elements. The combat system is once again based on real sword-fighting techniques and requires precision and tactics. Fights are challenging, especially for beginners, and players must time their attacks, dodge, and block blows correctly. The range of weapons and combat styles has been expanded, giving players more options for dealing with enemies. Moreover, the injury system has been improved – if the player suffers a serious injury, it must be treated or attended to by a healer, otherwise, the condition will worsen over time. Given the historical setting, it is logical that the game now features the earliest prototypes of firearms. Survival in the medieval world also plays a significant role. Food spoils, the character needs sleep, and dirty clothes and a bloodied face can affect how NPCs react to you. Washing at a barrel or visiting a bathhouse becomes necessary leisure. Choosing the right clothing for events where charisma matters is as important as picking the right armor. Finding the most comfortable bed to sleep in is beneficial. Drinking several liters of wine has far-reaching consequences – including a hangover. Trying to ride a horse under low-hanging branches can throw you off. Thanks to such little details, players truly feel that the world of Kingdom Come 2 is alive. Even non-playable characters feel real, behaving (mostly) rationally, and conversations are not just filler between action moments. For example, by talking to a scribe in a village, you may learn about a myth regarding a knight and his armor. If you investigate further, you discover that the myth is true and the armor can be found. Similarly, the same scribe’s house contains a chronicle referencing the famous Czech journalistic report “The Hag under the Root”. There are many such Easter eggs, not only for Czech players.
Speaking of Czech players… One of the biggest attractions for them is the fully localized Czech dubbing. Among the voice actors are familiar faces like Richard Wágner as Henry, Robert Hájek as Jan Ptáček, and Marek Vašut as Ota z Bergova. Other important Czech actors also appear, lending not just their voices but in some cases also their likenesses, giving the characters even more emotional depth and realism.
