What is Skrill?
An e-wallet that allows you a
safe,
fast, and
convenient way to pay online, requiring only an email and password. Skrill is commonly used for international transactions, cryptocurrency trading, online betting, and paying for goods online.
History
Skrill
was established in 2001 in the United Kingdom under the name Moneybookers. Just six years later, the company became one of the top 3 providers of electronic payment solutions in Europe. Between 2013 and 2015, the brand was rebranded from Moneybookers to Skrill. In 2015, Skrill was acquired by Paysafe Group (then Optimal Payments), which owned the competing e-wallet Neteller. The purchase cost approximately €45 million, and in the same year, Skrill merged with Ukash (a British competitor of Paysafecard). In 2018, Skrill began to expand its scope. Among the services offered were cryptocurrency trading and the ability to conduct international transactions. During its operation, Skrill also became a sponsor of several sports teams and events, including
AC Milan, Leeds United, and the European Poker Tour.
Who owns Skrill?
Currently, Skrill is owned by
Paysafe Group. They have a range of other payment solutions in their portfolio, such as the prepaid payment card
Paysafecard or the e-wallet
Neteller. Skrill thus becomes part of a broader ecosystem of payment solutions, enabling it to offer users comprehensive and reliable services.

How to withdraw money from a Skrill account?
Skrill offers the option to transfer money from your e-wallet easily to a bank account, payment card, or transfer it to Neteller. For some of you, it may also be suitable not to withdraw money but to use the Skrill payment card, which works like a regular payment card from your bank. We describe the Skrill payment card later in the article. Withdrawal process:

Skrill payment card
As described above, the Skrill payment card works like a regular payment card from any bank, except it is not linked to your bank account but to your Skrill account. You can apply for your Skrill card in your profile (you must have at least €10 in your account), and the card will be sent to your address in the following weeks. You can use the card for payments and also for withdrawals from standard ATMs. The Skrill payment card is available in the following currencies: USD, GBP, EUR, and PLN. A minor disadvantage is that the card is charged and costs €10 per year.
Skrill mobile app
If you own a smartphone with an Android or iOS operating system, we recommend downloading the Skrill app, which brings more convenience and additional options for using your account. With the app, you will always have your payment history at hand, you can send and receive money anytime and anywhere. You will be notified of every movement on your account. The app also has “Anti-fraud technology” that keeps you safe from various online scams.
Skrill and security
When paying with Skrill, you do not have to worry about your money. Skrill is regulated by the UK’s FCA regulatory authority, which controls the flow of money on the internet. Another security guarantee is that it is owned by Paysafe Group, which has been on the market for many years and is one of the largest. The payment method itself provides security, as with an e-wallet, you do not have to enter your sensitive bank details during transactions, keeping them protected. Unlike regular banks, the money you have in your Skrill account is always available – it is not used by the company (e.g., for providing loans) or any third party. Electronic money is backed by real money, and it is stored in a separate bank account, so you should not lose your money even if the company goes bankrupt.
Skrill and fees
Like the entire Paysafe Group, Skrill’s philosophy is clear: to be as cheap as possible for users. However, some fees cannot be avoided. Overview of fees at Skrill:
- Maintaining a Skrill account is free if you make at least one transaction per year; if no transaction is made, the fee is €5.
- A deposit using a bank account or payment card is charged a fee of 1%.
- Deposits using Neteller, Trustly, or Bitcoin are also charged a fee of 1% of the deposited amount.
- Deposits using Paysafecard in the Czech Republic are charged a fee of 5%.
- Withdrawing to a bank account is a fixed fee of €10, regardless of the withdrawal size.
- For payment cards, the fee is 7.5% of the transaction.
- The Skrill card itself will cost €10 per year.
- The fee for withdrawing with a Skrill card is 1.75%.
- The currency conversion fee is 3.99%.
- Sending money to another account has a fee of 1.49% with a minimum fee of €1.
Skrill and limits
Skrill strives to provide the best user experience and therefore tries not to limit users too much. However, Skrill is a regulated payment method, and you will encounter some limits, just like with other e-wallets. Limits vary and depend on your account verification level. Verification is divided into steps, and with each step, the limit increases. Additionally, your limit increases by using and reaching new levels, which you achieve when exceeding set amounts. There are Bronze – €240,000, Silver – €600,000, Gold – €1,800,000, and Diamond – €3,600,000 levels. If you do not have any of these levels, your limits will be:
- ATM withdrawal – €10,000.
- Daily limit at merchants – €40,000.
- Card usage fee – €10.
- ATM withdrawal fee – 1.75%.

Review
We rate Skrill positively, mainly due to its simplicity, security, and speed. We definitely consider Skrill a very interesting alternative to regular bank accounts and recommend it especially for those who frequently send money to foreign accounts and want to simplify transactions. Our positive review is supported by the fact that Skrill offers the possibility of a payment card and cryptocurrency trading.
