History of the game Punto Banco

The origins of the game baccarat date back to the 15th century, and its roots lie in Italy, as confirmed by its name, which is derived from the Italian word “baccara” (zero) referring to the cards with zero value (tens and face cards). The version Punto Banco, however, emerged much later, likely in the 1950s in Cuba. In this version, players are referred to as “Punto” and the banker as “Banco.” This version allows for the most players to participate of all baccarat variants and is characterized by strictly defined rules for drawing a third card.

Rules of the game Punto Banco

At an oval gaming table, up to 12 players can sit and play at once, which is the largest number of players who can play baccarat at one time. The game typically uses six decks of cards, but sometimes you may encounter a game with four or eight decks. The goal for all players, including the banker, is to achieve a total of 9 points with their cards or get as close to this total as possible to beat the opponent. Bets can be placed on Punto (the player) or Banco (the banker).

How to play Punto Banco?

At the start of the game, it is necessary to determine who will act as the banker (in online games or casinos, this role is exclusively held by the game operator, usually the casino). Then, both players are dealt two cards, and both draw a third card according to precisely established rules based on the two cards they hold, or rather, their total point value. Numbered cards from two to nine carry the same value as displayed on them. Tens and face cards (jack, queen, and king) have a value of zero, and an ace counts as 1 point. If the cards in a player’s hand exceed 10 points, the ten’s place is dropped, and only the unit’s place is counted. Thus, the total points for a player will always be less than or equal to nine.

Specific rules in the game Punto Banco

If a player or banker has cards valued at 8 or 9 points, both players stand, and this rule takes precedence over all other rules governing the player (Punto) and banker (Banco). However, if neither holds cards of these values, the game proceeds according to the player’s and banker’s rules.

  • Player’s rule (Punto): If the total of the player’s two cards is 0 – 5 points, they draw a third card, but if the total of these cards is higher, they must stand.
  • Banker’s rule (Banco): The banker draws a third card if the player stands and their own total is 0 – 5 points. If the Punto player draws a third card, the banker draws a third card based on what card the player received, and also according to the total of their own cards, as shown in the table below.
Sum of the banker’s two cards Value of the player’s (Punto) third card How the banker proceeds
0, 1, 2 any card draws a 3rd card
3 any card except 8 draws a 3rd card
4 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 draws a 3rd card
4 0, 1, 8, 9 stands
5 4, 5, 6, 7 draws a 3rd card
5 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 stands
6 6, 7 draws a 3rd card
6 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 stands
7 any card stands

Punto Banco – Rules for paying winnings

If a player wins in the game, all bets placed on the player are paid out at a ratio of 2:1. The same ratio applies to bets placed on the banker if they win in the game, but in this case, a 5% commission may be deducted from the winnings for the benefit of the game operator (the casino). If there is a tie, bets placed on the tie win with a payout ratio of 9:1, and bets placed on the player or banker are returned (push) at their original value.

Where can you play Punto Banco?

The Punto Banco version of baccarat can be played by players with their friends, family, or visitors at a favorite pub or bar, or in some brick-and-mortar casinos or gaming halls. These games can also be found on the websites of entertainment portals, where they can be played completely for free just for fun, or in some online casinos, where they can play for real money if they register at the casino and deposit their own money into their account.

Among the most well-known are various card games or even roulette, each of these games usually has simple rules but also room for strategy and various tactics.

Baccarat

Baccarat has several variants in which you can play this popular card game. It also falls into the category of gambling table games, as you will often find it in brick-and-mortar casinos as well as online casinos. In this game, the banker faces off against the players, with multiple players possible, but only one represents them. Both sides immediately receive two cards, and based on their total, the player decides whether to take another card or stand (similar to Blackjack). The goal is to get as close to a total value of 9. In online casinos, you will often find enhanced versions that also offer additional side bets for the chance of more winnings.
