Sometimes it seems that the battle royale market is oversaturated with games that don’t really offer anything substantial. Apex Legends is here to prove the opposite. It takes the best from the genre and elevates it further by offering hero selection and incorporating classic shooter mechanics.

Success of Apex Legends
Statistics clearly show that Apex was very successful at the time of its launch in 2019. Within the first seven days, the game reached 25 million players. Two years later, 100 million people had played it. The game runs on the Source engine (similar to Counter Strike 2) and is a continuation of the Titanfall series, borrowing some of its mechanics. Electronic Arts chose a free-to-play business model with microtransactions (lootboxes) for hero and weapon skins. Unlike traditional Steam skins (e.g. CS2 skins), Apex cosmetic items cannot be traded. Last year EA also “threatened” to charge for the Battle Pass, and rumors spread about introducing a monthly subscription model. This caused significant backlash among the player base, and the game’s publisher ultimately abandoned the plan. In 2025, Apex Legends is certainly not a dead game, and we can look forward to Season 24.
Game features and environment
We know a battle royale game with FPS elements from Call of Duty: Warzone, for example, but Apex is a year older and has one main distinction: the player selects a legend (character) before each match, each with unique abilities. As a result, playable characters can be divided into roles such as offense, defense, recon, etc. Matches are played solo or in duos and trios, with up to 20 teams on one game server. Everyone starts without equipment and selects a landing spot with their team. Only then begins the search for items and weapons, and the first skirmishes. A constantly shrinking survival zone ensures that all teams eventually meet. The last team standing wins. There are also 3vs3 arenas available, functioning as team deathmatches.

Hero selection
As mentioned above, this online multiplayer battle royale shooter offers character selection with individual abilities, which is a key difference compared to its competitors. There are 26 legends in total, with new ones added regularly. Since Season 16, all are divided into five categories based on their abilities:
- Skirmisher
- Recon
- Assault
- Support
- Controller
New heroes must be unlocked, which can be significantly sped up by paying real money, but this is not necessary and the game can be fully enjoyed for free.

Apex is completely free to download on the Steam platform, Epic Games, or the EA app and is available for next-gen consoles PlayStation (PS5 games), Nintendo Switch (Nintendo Switch games), and Xbox (Xbox games), as well as for PC. In 2022, a mobile version (Apex Legends Mobile) was also released, but it didn’t deliver a great gaming experience and quickly faded against mobile gaming giants. It was completely removed a year later and is no longer playable today. A new season on the horizon, bug fixes, and improved anti-cheat software ensure another successful year for Apex Legends. The game is constantly evolving, with new maps being added alongside new legends. While it may be tough for a newcomer to jump into a game as well-developed as Apex, it’s definitely worth it.
