GOG (or GOG.com), formerly known as Good Old Games, might seem unnecessary alongside giants like Steam and Epic Games. But is it really so? In this article, we will look at why GOG remains successful on the market despite players preferring other platforms. We will also show the main advantage GOG has over the competition.
GOG is a digital distribution platform intended for the sale of games and movies. It is owned by the Polish developer company CD Projekt, best known for the video game series The Witcher and the game Cyberpunk 2077. Established in 2008, it was created in response to the growing popularity of digital copies of video games. Before using GOG to purchase video games, registration and downloading the client is necessary. The main reason players use GOG is the absence of DRM. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. Its purpose is to control the use of licensed products, such as video games, but it also allows rights holders to manage how products are handled. In the world of video games, DRM tries to prevent copying or otherwise distributing game copies, which also means that a user of a digital distribution platform like Steam never truly owns the purchased game. They only own a license to play it. In the event of the platform’s collapse, the user would lose all access to purchased products.
The fact that GOG does not use DRM allows users to move their purchased games, for example, to a hard drive. In the event of GOG’s collapse, users would not lose their games and can be sure they truly own the purchased goods. Another point that highlights GOG compared to the competition is its care for old video game titles. Thanks to the GOG Preservation Program, these games can be played even on new machines, which otherwise would not be possible. Besides games, you can also watch several DRM-free movies on this platform, primarily intended for the gaming community. Today, 14 movies are available, mainly documentaries, which can be downloaded in mp4 format after purchase, so users are not limited by their playback device.
Due to its DRM-free policy, for which GOG is praised by players and disliked by publishers, there is a smaller selection of games than on Steam or Epic Games. This also means that some AAA titles will never appear here, but GOG still has a lot to offer. Given the ownership of the platform, it is certain that all games from CD Projekt will appear here, so The Witcher 4 will definitely be available on GOG. In addition, the store mainly offers older games, which are available for just a few euros. If you also take advantage of regular discounts, video games can be purchased very affordably here. Of course, there are also several free games available, although they might not appeal to everyone. We must not forget that competition is crucial for the end user in every market, and that also applies to the video game industry. Although GOG’s stance on DRM hurts its sales figures, it brings them closer to players. This is also one of the reasons why GOG remains relevant today alongside giants like Steam.
